Emmanuel is an Open and Affirming congregation! In 2004 one of the items that needed to be addressed was the proposal to become an “Open and Affirming” UCC Church. This means that we voted as a congregation to formally and boldly declare that we welcome all people, as Christ did, as beloved children of God, regardless of race, sex, age, nationality, sexual orientation, gender identity, differing abilities, or the state of one's spirituality. On October 16, 2005, after many informational meetings and much prayer the Deacons presented the following resolution for congregational approval, “We are a Christian congregation that embraces our oneness in Christ in all our human diversity, expressing Christ’s spirit of openness, welcome, equality, and unconditional love to all, without limit, regardless of race, nationality, immigration status, age, gender, social class, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, political persuasion, theological position, physical or mental capacity." This means we join hundreds of other United Church of Christ congregations across the country as a multi-racial, multi-cultural, and open and affirming church.
